On the Road: Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada – Lovey’s BBQ & Smokehouse

I went to check out Lovey’s BBQ with some coworkers. Lovey’s is one of the first BBQ restaurants in Winnipeg. It’s located in a small shopping strip so the seating area is a bit small and seating is a bit cramped. However, what Lovey’s lacks in space it makes up for in character. Essentially another candidate for Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives, the sweet smell of grilled meats from this low-profile place will make you instantly hungry. The menu features the BBQ standards like pulled pork, ribs, beef brisket, BBQ chicken, burgers, beans, coleslaw, potato salad and Canada’s poutine made with some really tasty french fries. It was just the guys hanging out, so we had mostly meats. The pulled pork sandwich is nicely portioned with succulent meat that hangs out of the bread and leaves morsels to pick up after the sandwich is gone. The sauce is average, but a nice offering for Winnipeg. Lovey’s offers a lot of different flavors of wings, which are pit-smoked as opposed to deep-fried. It’s a nice twist to the traditional wing, offering that grilled smoke flavor that people love about BBQ. We tried, Electric Honey (my fav), Garlic Parmesean, Devil’s Tears (spiciest offering, but more spicy that hot, they’re a good selection), and Chili Garlic. They had great flavor and we had fun passing them around to try them all. There could have been more flavors on the table, but honestly after a few beers and a few passes of the wing baskets they all kinda look the same, lol. Yes, Lovey’s has a beer and bourbon to go with your BBQ. Lovey’s also makes an appeal for special diet customers by offering a gluten-free menu. You can have good times at Lovey’s with good people.
