Review: Chazz: A Bronx Original

Chazz is a fairly new addition to the Harbor East area of downtown Baltimore. The restaurant was created by Hollywood star Chazz Palminteri (A Bronx Tale) and offers Bronx-based Italian cuisine. The ambiance is that of a dimly lit dinner hangout that has a casual feel to it. The dining room was very trendy, darkly painted and decorated, tiered, and spacious, although I feel the tables are placed a little too closely together and not enough space is designated for the waiting area.

One of the main draws of Chazz is their coal-fired oven for an authentic Bronx pizza, which they prepare with various specialties such as the Pepperoni, Margherita, and Broccoli Rabe, and the Potato. I have had the Pepperoni. The pizza was spicier than anticipated and to me something was throwing off the flavor in general. Sad, because it is had the texture and aroma of a promising Bronx pizza (thin crispy crust, still has a good chewiness, thin sauce, etc..). As always, try it for yourself. You may like it.

On the dinner menu, which is not extensive, I did try the chicken parmigiana and the shrimp parmigiana. They were some of the best renditions of these meals I’ve experienced. Perfectly breaded and fried, covered in cheese and sauce, they were enjoyable to the last bite.

The bar is pretty extensive, with well-trained staff, and the featured abundance of wine. I did not like the signature cocktails at the time, especially the Spicy Plum cocktail. However, at the time of writing this post, it looks like many people did not as it was removed from the published signature cocktail menu.

There are some hits and misses, but it is an experience that you should try. You may find the hit you are looking for.
