Review: Langermann’s

Langermann’s is a Southern Inspired restaurant and bar featuring American cuisine on Boston Street in the Canton area of Baltimore City,  in the Can Company building. They market themselves in the moderate price range and have an impressive depth of menu selections. The establishment is quite large and spacious, providing seated dining outside and inside on two levels, and a separate bar area. The ambiance is friendly, bustling, and a little loud in the evenings, with the after-work/happy hour crowd pouring into the bar and families and couples skipping the kitchen for a pleasant night out.

Catfish Fingers at Langermann’s

My trip to the restaurant was during Restaurant Week in Baltimore, which allowed me to try several different offerings for one low price. The appetizers were very ambitious and frankly unexpected. The Crispy Fried Catfish Fingers were a surprising appetizer item, so I gave them a try. A heaping portion of catfish pieces was delivered to the table with a lemon wedge, coleslaw, and tartar sauce. The fish was cooked to perfection. Juicy and tender on the inside, yet seasoned and crispy on the outside, they were excellent. Likewise, the Cape Fear Scallops were equally well received. Seared on both sides, prepared and served with tomato, shallots, bacon (everything is better with bacon), and buttered clam broth, the scallops were smooth textured and savory. The portion size was just enough to whet the appetite and make you crave more.

More is what you get with the entrees. The Herb Roasted Chicken was well-seasoned with herbs and roasted to a nice crispy, golden brown, then smothered in brown gravy. It was served over stewed green beans, which while soft, were salted well and complimented the creamy mashed potatoes sitting on the au jus from the chicken. Also, worth mentioning is the Aged White Cheddar Macaroni and Cheese and the New York Strip. Both of which, are very satisfying choices that you can pair with the 8 microbrews on tap, 10 domestic or 8 import bottles of beer and plentiful wine options. Cocktails are kept simple and to a minimum, with the menu only offering four classic drinks done traditionally.
