Review: Chef Mac’s and All That Blues

Chef Mac’s is a Louisiana Cuisine based restaurant in NE Baltimore’s Lauraville area. Saturdays at Chef Mac’s feature a buffet dinner and a live performance from a rotating plethora of bands performing many different styles of music. Visiting this restaurant was a pleasant experience.

The buffet overflowed with options. The salad section was fresh and crisp with leafy romaine lettuce and baby spinach leaves, mixed with radish and arugula and accompanied by seasoned croutons, mixed shredded cheeses, and other vegetables. Macaroni and cheese had dual textures with liquid cheese fillings the pasta, topped with firmer shredded cheese. The cucumber vinaigrette was very nicely balanced with chunky tomatoes and sweet red onions. There was also a cool, refreshing Southern-style potato salad that commanded a lot of attention. Not shying away from vegetables, two vegetable blends were offered as side dishes including a zucchini, carrot, onion, and bell pepper saute, as well as a potato bake with sour cream, cheese and chives. Vegetarians had a tortellini bake with eggplant pieces and tofu.

Meats on the far side of the buffet were exquisite. Baked chicken was perfectly seasoned and moist, not over-cooked. Fried chicken was seasoned much better than any Popeye’s can offer. Barbeque ribs were fall-off-the bone tender and finger-licking addictive. Likewise, pulled pork barbeque was  succulent and spicy-sweet. Finally, the prime rib was prepared perfectly, with juicy morsels soaking in a no-A1 sauce-needed au jus.

Dessert was just as ambitious as the previous courses. Warm peach oozed out of a mildly sweet crust covered with homemade whipped cream in the peach cobbler. Key lime pie was a sweet rendition of a classic. Carrot cake was traditional in its preparation, which was a safe choice in the midst of so much opulence.

Chef Mac’s Saturday buffet is a great value in food. With the addition of the entertaining band, friendly staff and BYOB ($5 corkage fee), Chef Mac’s is a place you need to try as soon as possible. You will not be disappointed.
